I recently got invited to a “favorite things” party to celebrate a close friend’s 40th birthday. If you aren’t familiar with a favorite things party, basically each guest brings 3 of the same favorite item or a collection of items and then you draw names and give the gifts you brought to other guests. For this party, I was asked to bring an item (or in my case, multiple items) valued around $10. I gave my three identical favorite things gifts to other guests and came home with favorite things that others brought. It was so fun.

At first, I racked my brain about what I could bring. I could think of favorite things like Maskcara IIID foundation or my Reebok lifting shoes, but obviously, those things weren’t go to fit in the $10 budget. I also had a hard time thinking of just one thing so I bundled several of my favorite things together into one gift.
Chocolate Covered Cinnamon Bears
I told my kids what I was doing and asked what they thought my favorite thing was and they all said to bring chocolate covered cinnamon bears.
My love for this little treat started when I was a student at Brigham Young University. I would celebrate leaving the testing center by heading to the bookstore for a bag of fresh chocolate covered cinnamon bears.
A few years ago, a grocery store came to town with a huge bulk food section and guess what they have? That’s right, my beloved chocolate covered cinnamon bears. They don’t taste quite as good as they did walking around the campus of my alma matter, but they are pretty much the same and when I need a little treat, chocolate covered cinnamon bears are my go to.
Journal and Favorite Pen
I asked my husband, Tim, what he thought I should include and he said to get a journal and a Sharpie pen.
He nailed it. A journal is one of my favorite things. I have written about journal writing here, here (guest post by my daughter) and here and I love getting the thoughts swirling around in my head out on paper. My current favorite journal is the Leuchtturm from Amazon. I have two of them and they are the best. Since the Leuchtturm journal is on the pricier side, I went with a cute journal from my favorite store, Target.
I have always loved writing with markers but it’s not always practical. A few years ago, I found these Sharpie pens and fell in love. I have them everywhere and they are my go to for journal writing and permission slip signing.
When I cleaned up my eating, cutting out soda was not a big deal because I have never been a soda drinker. I actually love drinking water, but once in awhile I just need something more and that is where LaCroix comes in. My favorite flavor for the past two years has been grapefruit, but I recently tried the passionfruit variety and I love it even more.
LaCroix is kind of an acquired taste. If you are a big soda drinker you probably won’t like it as it doesn’t have the sugary taste of soda, but I love it because it’s a nice change from straight water and the flavors are great.
I love Maybelline Baby Lips – Peach Kiss. It’s perfect for my casual days spent working from home and running kids around. I keep a tube in my bathroom, my laptop bag and my purse, so I am pretty much never without a little Peach Kiss when I need it.
Hair One Shampoo
Finally, I included a sample packet of my favorite shampoo, Hair One. I have actually only been using this shampoo for about a month but I LOVE it. It’s really not shampoo; it’s hair cleanser.
I have always been a daily hair washer, partly because I workout almost everyday and I am a sweater and partly because when I wake up in the morning my hair is a total grease ball. With Hair One my hair looks shiny and stays perfectly curled all day, and I can actually go another day without washing it and not feel gross. (Don’t tell my husband. He’s a clean freak.) I highly recommend trying this.
The party was tons of fun. As I mentioned above I brought three identical gifts, which I gave to other party guests. The birthday girl got one gift from each guest and everyone got to come home with two gifts. I got a fun new lipstick and more Baby Lips.
I really love seeing what other people’s favorite things are. What are your favorite things? I would love to hear what you would include in a gift for a favorite things party.
